Sweet on the West

Sweet on the West: How Candy Built a Colorado Treasure (Western Passages), by Ann Scarlett Daley (Editor), Denver Art Museum. TPB. William and Dorothy Harmsen were true American entrepreneurs—the ice cream store they opened in Golden, Colorado, in 1949 grew into the wildly successful Jolly Rancher Candy Company. In choosing that name for their business, the Harmsens embraced the American West as the defining identity of their company. Soon, they also began to collect art that depicted the American West. They bought works of art by recognized masters of American western art such as George Catlin and Ernest Blumenschein, but they also acquired works by artists who were taking contemporary approaches to time-honored western themes. The Harmsens were generous about sharing their collecting with the public, lending paintings to exhibitions and museums and sending groups of objects out on tour and, in 2001, donating the collection to the Denver Art Museum.

This, the second volume of the Institute of American Western Art’s ongoing book series Western Passages, celebrates the Harmsen’s legacy as Colorado businesspeople and philanthropists. Ann Scarlett Daley’s lively introductory essay details the story of the Harmsens’ success in building both their business and their collection. Following the essay is a full-color gallery of treasures from the Harmsen collection, accompanied by commentaries by scholars of American art.

The Colorado Plateau: Cultural, Biological, and Physical Research

The Colorado Plateau: Cultural, Biological, and Physical Research, by Charles, III Van Riper (Editor), Kenneth L. Cole (Editor) Stretching from the four corners of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, the Colorado Plateau is a natural laboratory for a wide range of studies. This volume presents 23 original articles drawn from more than 100 research projects presented at the Sixth Biennial Conference of Research on the Colorado Plateau. This scientific gathering revolved around research, inventory, and monitoring of lands in the region. The book's contents cover management techniques for cultural, biological, and physical resources, representing collaborative efforts among federal, university, and private sector scientists and land managers. Chapters on cultural concerns cover benchmarks of modern southwestern anthropological knowledge, models of past human activity and impact of modern visitation at newly established national monuments, challenges in implementing the 1964 Wilderness Act, and opportunities for increased federal research on Native American lands. The section on biological resources comprises sixteen chapters, with coverage that ranges from mammalian biogeography to responses of elk at the urban-wildland interface. Additional biological studies include the effects of fire and grazing on vegetation; research on bald eagles at Grand Canyon and tracking wild turkeys using radio collars; and management of palentological resources. Two final chapters on physical resources consider a proposed rerouting of the Rio de Flag River in urban Flagstaff, Arizona, and an examination of past climate patterns over the Plateau, using stream flow records and tree ring data. In light of similarities in habitat and climate across the Colorado Plateau, techniques useful to particular management units have been found to be applicable in many locations. This volume highlights an abundance of research that will prove useful for all of those working in the region, as well as for others seeking comparative studies that integrate research into land management actions.

The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness

The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness by Carl Johan Calleman, TPB from Bear & Co., ISBN 1591430283. Colorado Land Planning and Development Law

Colorado Land Planning and Development Law
Colorado Land Planning and Development Law, by Donald L. Elliott (Editor), American Planning Association Colorado Chapter. TPB. Just released!

Colorado Cold Case

Colorado Cold Case by Marti Talbott. HC. Forget the standard beginning of a typical mystery novel, because Colorado Cold Case in neither standard or typical as far as murder mysteries go because it is true. The author relates her first-hand experience as a witness to the trial of the man convicted of brutally killing two women (his wife included) and two children in a normally quiet western Colorado town. But is the convicted man the real killer? The author doesn't think so and lays out the facts of the case in a fast paced and intriguing fashion. Instead of starting in typical mystery fashion with "it was a dark and lonely night", the author chooses to relate her knowledge of the case through conversations with a man she meets while stranded in a snowstorm atop the Grand Mesa. The dialogue is brisk and informative and I found myself assimilated into the character of Sam, asking the same questions as I, like Sam, wanted to know to understand all the facts and by so knowing, determine who the real killer might be. Colorado Cold Case is not only a terrific mystery, but because it is horrificaly true, it grips the reader from the opening chapter. Don't wait to read Ms. Talbott's exceptionally well written and intriguing book. You'll be glad you did. Reviewed by Jerry D. Mohrlang of Parachute, Colorado
